What do you think you bring to projects as an actress?
This is not a comparison, because it’s dangerous to compare yourself to other people, but I think I bring a level of honesty and truth-telling that resonates.
Speaking of truth-telling, you strike me as someone with an excellent bullshit meter.
In Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s memoir, she discusses being sexually harassed by colleagues in government. I would imagine that, as an actress, you’ve been exposed to that kind of thing.
You know we went to college together, right? We were roommates at Dartmouth in China. She’s dedicated to empowering women, especially encouraging them to run for office… I’ve learned how to creatively manage situations like the ones Kirsten talks about. Unfortunately, we are put in those positions as women, and there’s a double standard for women who speak up. But I’m so excited when I see amazing, badass women like Kirsten Gillibrand and Lena Dunham and Sarah Silverman finding ways to say, “I see you, I call you on that shit, and I’m also going to make you respect me. And by the way, don’t you dare call me a bitch while I’m doing it.
